Healthy Foods to Eat on a Budget

Healthy Foods to Eat on a Budget

If you are on a tight budget, finding healthy foods at the grocery store may seem like a challenge, but there are healthy and economical choices in every aisle of the store. As tempting as all that junk food out there may sound, it really can be cheaper to eat food prepared at home. And with a little imagination and experimenting with herbs and spices in the kitchen, it will taste better as well. The first key to healthier eating is to have more healthy foods available to eat at home. So stop going to the drive-through and don't buy any more pre-packaged, over processed foods that you probably have in your kitchen now. Get yourself organized by creating a meal plan and a grocery list for the foods you need to prepare those meals. The next step is to go to your local grocery store and start buying whole foods that you can prepare at home with whatever kitchen resources you have there.

Increasing your consumption of whole foods, especially fruits and vegetables, will actually make your food selections in general much simpler. If the foods you are chosing contain more than 5 ingredients and include a lot of unfamiliar, unpronounceable items, you may want to reconsider buying them. Counting calories, carbs, or fat grams won't be as necessary when you select foods that are more a product of nature than a product of industry. Finding healthy foods to eat at the grocery store is pretty simple. They are found in the "fresh food" sections like the produce and refrigerated meat and fish departments. The frozen and dry aisles also contain good healthy foods, although there are many unhealthy distractions there as well.

Healthy foods you should have available at home to cook with include whole foods (food in its most natural state), fruits and vegetables, dairy products (low-fat milk, yogurt, cheese and eggs), seafood, lean cuts of pork, beef and chicken, naturally sweetened whole juices and lots of water.

The kind of foods to avoid include refined grains (white flour or white rice), refined white sugar, any form of corn syrup and anything out of a box that contains more than 5 ingredients.

Making the switch to eating healthy food does require a change in mindset, along with some imagination and preparation. It will help to make a weekly meal plan, and from that a good, organized grocery list to take to the store with you. This will help keep you focused and cut down on the number of trips you make to the grocery store.

A Healthy Food Guide For The Vegetarian Diet

A Healthy Food Guide For The Vegetarian Diet

The general viewpoint is that you can't go wrong with a vegetarian diet; it is nutrient rich with plenty of fiber, vitamins and antioxidants. But did you know that vegetarian diets can be low in protein if adequate beans, lentils, and/or dairy are not included? For example, a vegetarian meal that only consists of a leafy green salad with a side of whole grain bread is low in protein. Adding beans to the leafy green salad, a side of lentil soup, and/or a serving of non-fat milk or yogurt are easy ways to include protein in the meal. Also, eating the same lettuce salad for lunch every day can also mean that your diet lacks variety. Eating a variety of vegetables and fruits ensures that you are getting different nutrients from naturals foods on a regular basis. Whether you are eating at home or in a restaurant, there are websites with free tools that you can use to look up the nutrition data of foods and recipes.

Most free nutrition databases that are available online, provide the calorie, carbohydrate, protein, and fat content of foods. They may also include additional nutrition information of food like dietary fiber, cholesterol, and sodium content. The field of nutrition is continuously evolving due to extensive scientific research that is conducted globally. Board certified nutrition professionals are required to continuously update their knowledge and skills based on the results of the latest scientific research. Stay current with dietary recommendations by reading nutrition tips provided by qualified experts; avoid the yo-yo effects of fad diets and miracle foods.

Qualified nutrition professionals with specializations in chronic health diseases, food allergies, dietary restrictions or ethnic diets may also offer support via personalized diet consultations and advice. Many Indians follow a vegetarian diet that also includes eggs, and dairy products like milk, yogurt, buttermilk, cheese, and butter. Most savory Indian snack foods tend to be deep fried while desserts are made with ghee (clarified butter). Moderation is important as both the snacks and desserts are high in fat. There are very few free online food databases that provide accurate Indian cuisine nutrition facts or a protein content food list for ethnic cuisine. Working with a qualified nutrition professional who is also knowledgeable in ethnic dietary restrictions helps with the creation of appropriate meal plans and diet modifications that work for your lifestyle and health requirements. Whether it is heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, pregnancy, or weight loss, utilize the services offered by qualified nutrition experts to meet your health goals.

Good Diet Food - Five Simple Tips to Recognize Healthy Diet Foods

Good Diet Food - Five Simple Tips to Recognize Healthy Diet Foods

More often than not, one of the most common questions being thrown in the Internet is about looking for a good diet food. Everyone is interested and every doctor has been asked this and yet, everywhere we go we still see self-confessed health nuts gorging on the wrong food groups. So to shed some light into the answers to these questions, here are the best foods to eat in order to achieve a healthy diet:

Avoid Fatty Foods

For your daily diet, it is recommended that you avoid too much fatty foods and instead, you must focus on protein-enriched foods that could help you to burn the calories that you eat each day. Take note that fats and carbohydrates are not the same, and fats are more prone to be stored into your body which would later on become love handles and other flab. Apart from this, quality protein from grass-fed beef, organic chicken, almonds, almond butter and salmon also keeps you more satisfied longer which means that you are hungry less often and you are less likely to put more food into your mouth every couple of hours or so.

Carbohydrates Must Be Included in Your Diet

Contrary to what a lot of people think about, carbohydrates aren't that bad at all, and you need these in order to have more energy to perform your daily task. Among the most common sources of fiber are veggies and fruits, like avocado, beans, carrot, sweet potatoes and egg plants - these foods are what you should consider as good diet food that you must regularly consume. If you can, stay away from foods with refined sugars like those that are often found on pastry shops, candies, and some other processed foods that can be bought on supermarkets.

You Don't Need to Eliminate Fats in Your Diet

Health enthusiasts will always tell you one thing and that is to not be afraid to eat fat. Not eating enough of this important food group will affect your hormone level not to mention your overall body health so do take in good sources such as nuts and seeds, avocados, olive oil, organic meat and eggs, as well as coconut and virgin oil. Keep in mind, highly saturated fats are still beneficial but must be taken in moderation, like all other things.

Avoid Processed Foods

In order to keep those flab away, you must avoid artificial Trans fats that came from margarine, shortening and some other hydrogenated oils that are on processed foods. Also, most sweetened products contain high fructose corn syrup which can be detrimental to your goal of losing weight and effectively keeping them off. So as you can see, the best way to keep those flab away is to avoid those processed foods like frozen chicken and other sausage products in the groceries, including chips and other canned foods.

Be careful with food labels

Do not be easily fooled with labels that would talk about reduced fat and non-fat. Check the labels to make sure that what you are buying is indeed a kind of food that is good for your diet. You might find this a very tedious task, but you will soon get used to all this.

In all fairness, being healthy and staying healthy has its rewards as what you may already know from watching all that TV and going on the Internet so much. Achieving such a goal is important and definitely among the components of this process is making sure that you stick with a good diet food group, at all costs with only the occasional slip ups.

Remember, health is wealth and while all the riches in the world may help in keeping you look young and vigorous; there is nothing like a sound exercise and healthy eating that will ensure you a long and fruitful life.

Check out a program that can teach you to create an excellent diet plan based on your body type at Burn the Fat review. You can't expect to see result with a mere diet program as regular exercise is also a must. See a few key tips in fat loss exercise at how to lose arm fat.

Healthy Foods

Healthy Foods

WHOLE FOODS

Whole foods have many benefits over processed foods. Processed foods are typically loaded with artificial additives, sugar and salt. In addition, the processing usually strips them of many of the vitamins and minerals essential for good health.

Avoid: White Pasta

Choose: Brown pasta, wholegrain pasta, wheat free pasta, gluten free pasta.

Avoid: White flour and bread

Choose: Whole meal bread and flour, oatcakes, rice cakes, pumpernickel.

Avoid: White rice

Choose: Brown rice, millet, buckwheat, bulgur wheat, couscous, oats.

Avoid: Sugar sweets, cakes, biscuits.

Choose: Fruit - either natural or dried.

All processed meals should be avoided. Instead, cook meals using fresh natural ingredients (organic where possible).

DAIRY

Eating dairy is positively implicated in weight loss. In addition, dairy has been shown to help remove fat from your digestive system. However, many dairy foods are also high in fat - the key is therefore to choose low fat dairy products. Good choices include skimmed (non-fat) milk, low fat cheese, live organic yogurt, soya cheese, and tofu. Watch out also for high sugar levels in most brand named yogurts.

MEAT AND FISH

It has been known that a high consumption of red meat has been linked to various diseases, and many cuts are also high in saturated fat. It is therefore important to limit your intake of red meat. However, fresh fish contains high levels of essential fatty acids, which have been shown to protect against many diseases, including heart disease. You should integrate white meats and fish, especially herrings, mackerel, salmon and sardines into your diet as best you can.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

Fresh fruit and vegetables are low in calories and high in fibre, vitamins, minerals and water, and should therefore form a large part of your diet. In addition, raw foods have been shown to improve energy, vitality and well being.

ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS

These are required by the body for optimum health. They are found in cold pressed oils, (safflower, walnut, olive and sunflower), nuts, seeds, avocados and fish oils. It is recommended that you avoid processed oils and margarine, especially hydrogenated oils.

See my article on "Good Fats and Bad Fats" for more information.

DRINKS

Maintaining a good level of hydration is vital. The best choice is water, mineral water, herbal teas, and diluted fruit juices. Popular drinks such as tea, coffee and soda all contain additives such as sugar and caffeine and are best used in moderation.

Tips for Planning a Healthy Diet

Tips for Planning a Healthy Diet

The subject of 'nutrition' is highly interesting and stimulating, the vastness of the subject includes advanced knowledge and studies of the human body and its reactions to various foods, the assimilation process and the do's and don'ts of maintaining proper health through a proper lifestyle.

The key to a healthy lifestyle is very obviously a diet that is balanced in every way; one that suits an individual's metabolism and enhances energy, vitality and well-being. The term 'diet' generally refers to the amount of food consumed by an individual, human or animal; 'dietary habits' refer to the individual decisions and choices made by a person in choosing what food to eat. In specifics, diet also refers to a particular intake of nutritious food consciously chosen for health and weight management reasons, whether by the concerned individual or by practiced health experts. Therefore, a person's health, longevity and quality of life is reflected through dietary choices and preferences made with reference to geographical region, culture, ethnicity and availability of food choices.

A proper diet for humans requires ingestion, digestion and absorption of needed energy, minerals and vitamins from the types of foods chosen - carbohydrates, fats and proteins among them.

Weight Management is the area of nutrition where a diet is chosen or put together to help with weight gain or weight loss. To meet specific needs of nutrition, energy and well-being some foods are recommended while some may be avoided so as not to upset the equilibrium of the body and prevent imbalance. However specific a diet is, it has to be in conjunction with an exercise regimen or fitness program, even the most basic ones as walking, cycling, swimming or body workouts. But in spite of many advancements and researched studies, there are many diets and weight-loss programs that are harmful to the human body as they neglect to promote good health. This is because some diets are singularly focused on weight-loss and advise quick schemes and programs that may or may not guarantee weight-loss but cannot guarantee good health.

As we know, in the developed world, random and unhealthy food choices and habits mainly dictated by affluence have led to large populations suffering from ill-health, obesity and sicknesses. Yet, there is no one singular diet or nutrition program that can be called a healthy diet; moderation is the key to consumption and a diet that is well-rounded with healthy food choices and a minimum fitness schedule can work wonders for everyone.

If there is a need to draw up or follow a particular diet for health reasons, there are some important issues involved that will help in the long run; after all, a diet is followed to achieve some amount of success in attaining the end-results or goals.

The most important thing to remember about imposing dietary restrictions is not to aim to become unrealistically thin or by self deprivation of favorite foods. Rather it is about healthy eating, about feeling positive regarding the choices made, being more energetic and having a balanced mood or attitude always. There is no doubt a surplus of information that one can have about diets; no two are alike and there are several contradictions. However by working around foods that suit an individual and making a plan which is practical and wholesome, anybody can create a tasty and healthy diet that has a balanced mix of all nutrients without overdoing or under-doing any food element.

Following and maintaining a diet can be achieved if some simple rules are observed.

1. Make a practical measure of the success to be achieved
2. Moderation is Key
3. It's 'how' foods are consumed not 'what' foods are consumed
4. Have a colorful mix of natural foods - good portions of vegetables and fruits
5. Consume healthier options like whole grains, healthy carbohydrates and proteins

Follow A Healthy Food Guide To Keep Hypertension At Bay

Follow A Healthy Food Guide To Keep Hypertension At Bay

Hypertension is a serious health condition that affects people of all ages across the globe, irrespective of their geographical location and lifestyle. As per the 2012 global health statistics released by World Health Organization, India alone accounts for 15% of world's uncontrolled hypertension patients. That is about 23.10% men and 22.60% women over the age of 25 years who suffer from this disease. Heart disease prevention is one of the prime reasons for urban masses concentrating on fitness. However, prevalence of hypertension is traced in rural areas too, where physical strain is excessive. Many bear a misconception that hypertension can be diagnosed early with a certain set of obvious symptoms like headache, nose bleeds, dizziness, lack of breath and several others. However, the truth continues to be neglected.

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure is an asymptomatic disease in general. A person can be suffering from hypertension for years, without even knowing it. The best way to deal with it is early diagnosis and prevention. Stress, excessive salt intake and lack of healthy heart-friendly nutrients in diet being the main causes of HBP, a healthy diet and regular exercise routine is always emphasized upon by the health experts. As it becomes a bit difficult to count the fat contents of foods, every time before eating, the doctors have proposed a DASH (Dietary Approaches To Stop Hypertension) strategy that effectively lowers the blood pressure.

A DASH diet basically focuses on enjoying a wholesome diet, with the inclusion of vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, fish, poultry, nuts and low fat dairy products on a daily basis. As red meat, excessive sodium intake and synthetic sugars aggravate the situation, DASH diet solely concentrates on the consumption on food that score high on healthy fats and rich nutrients that maintain the blood pressure. To help you get started, here is a simple healthy food guide that is easy to follow and helps prevent hypertension effectively.

As the nutrition requirements varies from individual to individual, the nutrition data suggested here is calculated in terms of 2000 calories per day. Below is a sample DASH diet plan for various food groups and their total number of servings per day.

DASH Diet - 2000 calories/day

Whole grains: 6 to 8 servings of a whole grain bread slice or 1/2 cup of cooked rice.
Vegetables: 4 to 5 servings of 1 cup raw leafy veggies or 1/2 cup cooked vegetables.
Fruits: 4 to 5 servings of 1 medium sized fruit, 1/2 cup mixed fresh fruit, 1/4 cup dried fruit or 1/2 cup fruit juice.
Dairy: 2 to 3 servings of 1 cup low fat milk or yogurt.
Poultry, lean meat and fish: 6 servings of egg (cut down on yolks) or 1 oz. cooked poultry/fish.
Legumes, nuts and seeds: 4 to 5 servings per week of 2 tbsp of peanut butter or 1.5 oz. nuts or 1/2 cup of cooked beans/lentils.
Fats and oils: 2 to 3 servings of 1 tsp vegetable oil.
Deserts with artificial sugar: 4 to 5 servings per week of foods containing 1 tablespoon sugar.
Sodium: 1500 to 2300 mg/day.

To meet your daily calorie goals, request a dietitian to create a Dash diet for you.

The Four Primary Qualities of Healthy Foods That Are Advantageous For You

The Four Primary Qualities of Healthy Foods That Are Advantageous For You

We want to think the foods we consume are in fact nutritious. We know they taste great. They are delivered fast. And, nobody wants to harm us, do they?

Nevertheless, it may shock you to learn that our food industry is really a profit making segment of our society. They compete for every penny they can get. Their stockholders are interested in the optimal rate of return on their investment. The pressure, therefore, is on the food industry to produce a product that's both tasty to keep you coming back for more and profitable at the same time.

Nourishment is just not uppermost in the thoughts of the stockholders or the food manufacturers. However, it must be important to you as your health and life depend on you consuming nutritious food.

So, that brings us to some features of good, nourishing food. Good foods are identified by these 4 characteristics:

1) Good foods keep their nutrient qualities. This means they go through as little processing as possible. Processing regularly extracts fiber and other vitamins and minerals from whole foods. White flour, as an example, has the nutritious bran and germ removed. This produces a more "pure" looking product with a higher concentration of calories and a higher glycemic index. White flour is used to produce most baked goods. You need to understand that many of these processed foods have had nourishing components eliminated.

2) Good foods don't have refined carbohydrates, predominantly sugar, added to them. Seemingly healthy foods, like multi-grain cereals, almost always have several forms of sugar added to make them more appetizing. All of the sugars and sugar substitutes lack dietary value and may cause harm.

Sugars help make people fat and have been linked to numerous illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, heart conditions, hypertension, osteoarthritis and some cancers. There is most likely no valid health reason for eating foods with added sugar.

3) Good foods should not have chemicals, hormones, antibiotics or drugs included with them. Fertilizers, pesticides, growth hormones are an insignificant part in any individual meal we eat. Nevertheless, the steady introduction of these compounds into our bodies causes apprehension in some circles. The European Union has banned growth hormones in beef production because of possible human health risks. A Consumer Reports inspection found unsafe amounts of pesticides on some fresh produce, including products grown in the United States.

4) Good foods are combined together to offer each of the essential vitamins, minerals and fiber for a hearty diet. To grow healthy we require the correct nutrients every day. These include vitamins, minerals, fiber and complete protein. Consuming foods for the reason that they taste good and are convenient may not provide optimal nutrition.

Overall, all of us need to examine our diets to cut back on processed foods and manufactured foods with refined carbohydrates. Organically grown fruits, vegetables, and meats help cut down on contaminants that could help produce sickness. And, we should learn to combine foods in a systematic approach to supply optimal nutrition. These action steps allow more good food into our bodies and result in better health and a longer life.

Improve Dental Health by Eating the Right Foods

Improve Dental Health by Eating the Right Foods

How are Tooth Cavities Caused?

Eating right can help prevent the two most common dental problems that people typically struggle with: Cavities and gum disease. Tooth decay (that eventually leads to cavities) is caused by accumulation of bacteria in the mouth. This bacteria comes from the food you eat and acts on the sugars contained in food (this is why sugary foods are not good for teeth).

The acid produced slowly eats away at your tooth enamel and then the internal part of the tooth called the dentine. Finally, over a time, the tooth gets 'eaten away' by acid and chips off, leaving behind a hole or cavity. Cavities are often hotbeds for bacterial infection and can lead to severe tooth ache.

Moreover, bacteria from the mouth may enter your body through the saliva or the bloodstream leading to other health problems.

What is the Relationship between Food and Dental Health?

A balanced diet gives the body the right amount of nutrients. Nutrients help the body revitalize its immune system and this in turn boosts resistance to dental diseases.

Calcium helps build teeth and the jaw. A person who eats a diet poor in calcium is more likely to develop dental problems. To help the body absorb the calcium, the diet should contain adequate amounts of vitamin D. Lack of vitamin D in the diet can lead to dry mouth, burning sensations and a bitter taste in the mouth.

Iron is also necessary for nourishment of blood vessels in the mouth. Deficiency in iron may lead to ulcerated sores and inflammation of the tongue. Vitamin C also helps in absorption of iron.

Adequate amounts of Vitamin B2, B12 (riboflavin)and B3 (niacin) can prevent bad breath and ulcers. So your diet should ideally contain all these nutrients. eating the right foods can stave off dental problems and reverse tooth decay.

Which Foods are Good for Dental Health?

The following foods are good for improving dental health:

  • Milk, yoghurt, cheese, oysters, beans - These contain calcium and phosphates that help re-mineralize teeth and also strengthen gums
  • Nuts, bran, red meat, liver - These foods contain high levels of iron
  • Pasta, spinach, chicken, fish, almonds - These are concentrated sources of vitamin B2, B12 and B3
  • Pears, sweet potatoes, red peppers, Kiwi fruit and oranges are great sources of vitamin C
  • Celery stimulates the salivary glands leading to production of saliva. Saliva dilutes concentration of bacteria. Celery also acts as a natural floss and cleans between teeth
  • Raisins are excellent sources of oleanolic acid that discourages the growth of oral bacteria
  • Onions have a strong antibacterial action due to the sulphurous compounds they produce. They are best when eaten fresh and raw.

Which Foods are bad for Dental Health?

It's advisable to curb intake of the following foods:

Carbonated Soft Drinks: Soft drinks, canned iced teas and diet colas all contain flavor enhancers. Although diet sodas contain much less sugar than their conventional counterparts, they contain tooth-enamel eroding acids, namely phosphoric acid and citric acid.

Alcohol: Feeling dry-mouthed after last night's party? That's the alcohol working to dry up salivary secretions. Ensure that your mouth is protected from excessive dryness by using rehydrating rinses or simply by drinking a lot of water.

Candy bars, lollipops and toffee bars: Any sweet that involves prolonged sucking and chewing is bad for teeth. This is not just related to the sugar content (although that's bad too). The longer the sugar stays in the mouth, the worse it is for your teeth - the bacteria get to metabolize the sugars for a longer time.

Summary

To put it in a nutshell, take care to avoid acidic and sweet foods. If you want to drink orange or grape juice, suck it through a straw and swallow it straight down the throat. Swishing it around the mouth is more likely to give your teeth an unwanted acid bath.

As a precaution, rinse your mouth with clean water after drinking or eating sugary or acidic foods. This helps get rid of the acid deposit on the teeth and prevents tooth decay.

Healthy Foods to Send to Preschool

Healthy Foods to Send to Preschool

Overview

When your child is about one year old, they can eat some foods, but not all foods. They may or may not have teeth and finding something healthy to pack for preschool/daycare can be daunting.

As a previous preschool teacher, and teacher of one year olds, I have some Do's and Don'ts for you.

This or That?

Do NOT Send

  • Weiner dogs, no matter the size
  • Whole grapes

Do Send

  • Fresh fruit - make sure it is cut into small pieces that will not get stuck in your baby's throat. Children love strawberries, blueberries, bananas, and citrus.
  • Squeeze packs - there are many packs available now that are organic, preservative free, and very healthy for your baby. I always tell parents to load up on these when they are on sale because they can get pricey if you buy them regularly.
  • Chicken and Turkey - shred the meat. If you cook the meat slowly, preferably in a steamer or crockpot, the meat will get cooked thoroughly and will fall apart easily. This is a good way to get some protein in your baby's diet. Think about shredded meat for BBQ sandwiches, and make the meat even smaller. Your child will love it! Just don't send BBQ sauce with it as that will be a big mess for the teacher to clean up!
  • Crackers and Pretzels
  • Nuts - make sure you child has enough teeth and the capability of chewing before you send nuts.
  • Sandwiches - cut into small pieces for your child
  • Ham - shredded. Go to the deli at your grocery store and find a ham with no preservatives or hormones. Then have them shred the meat as small as they can. This will be great for your little one to eat.
  • Cereal/Trail Mixes
  • Granola bars
  • Cheese - shredded or cut into very small pieces. You can also buy stick and string cheeses but they will be pricier. If you can, find cheese that is all natural. I like to use Sargento.

Additional Advice

Make sure and tell the teacher if you are introducing new foods. This will let the teacher know to help the child understand the new food. It will also alert them to watch for allergic reactions. Also, don't give your child all new food all at once. Introduce new foods in the midst of foods you know they already like. This will ensure that your child will have some food to eat even if he/she doesn't like the new food.

Babies are very finicky. So if your baby doesn't like something today, reintroduce it in a few weeks. They will likely take to it then. Their taste is developing which causes their likes and dislikes to change frequently. This may cause them to quit liking something that they used to love. It's OK. They will likely return to it later.

Be patient with your child and continue to introduce them to new and old foods. Variety in the early years will help your child to develop a diverse palette.

Diet + Good Food Choices = Healthy Living

Diet + Good Food Choices = Healthy Living

It's no secret that diet along with good food choices will reward you with healthy living. But the main component of that statement is the fact that the two together work much better than each on their own do. And actually, you may have already discovered that when you do cut back on your salt, sugar and fat intake that you start to feel a little better, but you're really not getting into shape and dropping the pounds you expected to. That's because your metabolism is fervently working without the added boost it would be getting if you were working out as well. And if you're exercising, but not eating properly, you might notice that your energy level may still be somewhat lacking. That's because you're not getting the right nutrients to sustain an active lifestyle.

The key is to devise a workable plan for yourself that balances your diet which includes the right food choices and a satisfactory level of exercise to give you that healthy living result you're after. But with so many different diets throwing themselves at us on a constant basis, how do you know which one is right for you? Well, to help you decipher this common dilemma and give you a break from the same old diet plans, let's take a look at one of newest developments in the weight loss arena to give you a fresh, new option.

GI Diet

One of the hottest diets to enter the scene and that is rapidly growing in popularity across Europe is the Glycemic Impact (GI) Diet. This diet includes foods that will get you well on your way to healthy living. It incorporates food choices that are designed to work together to give you more energy while you lose weight. It's also said to be great for stabilizing blood sugar so that you don't experience those highs and lows that result from eating foods with a high sugar content. The strategy behind it is that it combines lean proteins and unrefined complex carbohydrates with healthy fats to speed up your metabolism as it slows down digestion to help you to feel fuller longer. Many of the food choices included in this diet are probably things you're already eating:

o Grilled Chicken

o Asparagus

o Roast Turkey

o Broiled Fish

o Raspberries

o Almonds

o Cheese

o Couscous

o Pita

o Eggs (Florentine even!)

The GI Diet is actually one that is so seemingly nutritious and delicious, you could easily incorporate these foods into your daily life, for the rest of your life and achieve that level of healthy living you desire. There's a wide variation of tasty recipes that you could create just from the items on this list alone.

And don't forget to exercise at least 3 times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes to help you achieve the best results. So now that you have some good information on this new plan, you can weigh the pros against the cons and decide whether or not you think this diet includes the kinds of food choices you enjoy and that will effectively work with you to attain a healthy lifestyle.

Raw Foods Diet Detoxification - Cleanse the Body and Emanate Health Naturally!

Raw Foods Diet Detoxification - Cleanse the Body and Emanate Health Naturally!

"If any kind of diet shall heal it must consist of food... according to qualities of healing, cleaning, and of elimination." - Professor Arnold Ehret, holistic health pioneer and author of several books on diet, detoxification, fasting, longevity, and vitalism.

If you're really serious about health, it's time to purge all the toxins you've accumulated from dietary and environmental sources. Natural detoxification cleanses the body of obstructions and reactivates the body's own infinitely powerful healing mechanism.

Circulating through each human being is about 5 liters of blood. But astoundingly each one of contains 4 times that much lymph fluid. Lymph fluid composed of lymphocytes, or lymphatic system cells, serves as the body's toxin filter by rounding up poisons for excretion from our systems - whether through sweat, stool, urine, or respiration.

The body's ability to purge harmful obstructions and toxins is quite robust. By using the lymphatic system in conjunction with the kidneys, liver and colon, it can rid the system of just about any harmful substance. However, when our diets surpass a certain toxicity threshold, even the intricate excretory systems of the human body need assistance in flushing out harmful substances.

*Standard American Diet (S.A.D.)

According to the World Health Organization and International Programme on Chemical Safety, "Over 90 percent of human background exposure" to dioxins - hundreds of highly toxic, slow-to-decompose chemicals known to cause cancer, skewed hormone levels, chronic fatigue, and other severe reproductive and developmental ailments - "is estimated to occur through the diet, with food from animal origin being the predominant source." The WHO-IPCS cites "contaminated feed for cattle, chicken and farmed fish" and "food processing" as ways these destructive poisons end up on our dinner plates.

Unfortunately, the standard American diet consists principally of meat/dairy ("animal origin") based products and other high/sugar/starch/fat processed foodstuffs.

Because cows [and most other animals] in modern farms are confined to such small spaces and kept so cramped together, infections run rampant. To suppress symptoms and keep the cows alive until slaughter, farmers administer gross quantities of antibiotics - which you of course ingest upon eating store-bought meat.

Further, eating meat, drinking milk, or consuming practically any dairy product exposes your body to the artificial hormones (given to animals by way of under-ear, slow release implants) to force unnaturally fast growth and fattening.

95% of the foods found in the average super market are at least partially toxic. Meat, dairy, and all the other cooked processed foods contain indigestible preservatives and harmful man-made compounds such as polychlorinated bipehyls - used in the construction of electrical equipment - and polyvinyl chloride - found in everything from telephone wires to PVC pipe.

Maybe even these poisons could be flushed by the body if the modern diet were not so rich in fats and cooked foods. Consumption of lipids (fats) and cooked and processed foods causes the blood to become sluggishly thick. Aside from practically immobilizing hemoglobin (red blood cells) which causes widespread depravation of oxygen and nutrient, this over-thickening prevents the lymphatic system from diffusing collected toxins into the blood for removal from the body through urine, stool, perspiration, or respiration.

*Hope - Cleanse, Detoxify, Regenerate!

"Of the many effects evaluated... in adult study populations... exposed to dioxins, dioxin-like and non-dioxin-like compounds..., many were transient effects disappearing after the end of exposure." Simply put, all the ailing symptoms of ingesting toxins can disappear through detoxification!

Okay, so toxins in my S.A.D. diet are flooding my body with poisons and stopping me from living life to the fullest. How do I start the detoxification process to unlock my full potential for health and happiness?

The answer is quite simple: cut out the bad and replace it with the good.

It's time to transition to an immensely beneficial, potential-maximizing organic raw foods diet! Bright succulent fruits, juicy greens, and protein-packed, hunger-smashing nuts and seeds all work to evacuate toxins from the body and remedy nutrient deficiencies to achieve radiant health.

If you're ready to rid yourself of headaches, excess body fat, skin problems, fatigue, excessive stress, sugar cravings, allergies, colds, infections, cancers, and emotional eating habits that come with over-toxicity, then you need to cleanse and detoxify now!

World-renowned authors and holistic nutritionists Yuri Elkaim, CK, RHN and Amy Coates, RHN, BSc have developed a proven 30 day detoxification, life-altering program designed to flush your body of harmful toxins and nurture it to a complete state of thriving health and happiness!

Diet Food Healthy or Not Healthy: The Shocking Truth About "Good" Foods

Diet Food Healthy or Not Healthy: The Shocking Truth About

If you call food diet food, it becomes almost consequence free in the eyes of some people. They think that low fat equates low calories and they feel free to wolf it all down. The same goes with lower sugar or any of the other confusing labels that are on our favorite diet food, healthy or not. Learning to read a label is probably one of the first steps you have to take toward making sure that you have the right food to add to your diet as well as a better understanding of what we as a nation are consuming.

Diet Food: Healthy or Not? The Stats Don't Lie

Shakira, the swivel hipped Latin American singer, sings a song called "My Hips don't Lie." Sadly, most people's hips don't lie, nor do the statistics. The average person in the United States consumes more processed foods than fresh foods: 56% more to be exact. An international study that was completed in conjunction with the USDA showed that the average American consumes just 369 pound of fresh foods per person, per year. That number is broken down into 124 pounds of fruits, 117 pounds of meat, poultry and seafood, 92 pounds of vegetables, 30 pounds of eggs, nuts and peanuts and 6 pounds of legumes. That same study showed that the average American was consuming 576 pounds of processed foods (including healthy options like dairy) per person, per year. That number's breakdown: 198 pounds of dairy foods, 97 pounds of sweeteners including sugar, corn sweeteners, honey and syrups, 78 pounds of bakery products including bagels, breads, muffins and more, 54 pounds of soup, pasta and other canned goods, 47 pounds of frozen and dried processed foods, 43 pounds of snacks and candy, 43 pounds of chilled food and ready-to-eat meals and 16 pounds of sauces, condiments and dressings (Source: Fitness Magazine, September 2010).

Diet Food Healthy Strategy: Know the Label Meanings

The Food and Drug Administration, more commonly known as the FDA, sets guidelines for what can and cannot be put on a food label for a reason. Without regulation, food makers could put any wild claim they wanted on their labels without having to back any of them up at all. They could also omit the ingredients they would rather you did not focus on. The FDA Regulations on food labeling includes guidelines for words like low fat, low salt, and no sugar added.

- Zero fat or fat free: must contain less than ½ gram of fat per serving

- Lower or reduced fat: must have at least 25% less fat per serving than the regular version of the same food at the same serving size

- Low fat: must have less than three grams of fat per serving

- Lite: must contain 1/3 the calories or ½ the fat per serving of the original version at the same serving size

- Zero calorie or calorie free: must have less than five calories per serving

- Low calories: must have 1/3 the calories of the original version at the same serving size

- Sugar free: must have less than ½ gram of sugar per serving

- Zero preservatives: must have neither chemical or naturally occurring preservatives

- No preservatives added: may have naturally occurring preservative ingredients but none added

- Low sodium: must have less than 140 mgs of sodium per serving

- High fiber: must have 5 grams or more of fiber per serving. These foods must also be low fat or have the total fat grams placed next to the fiber count on the label.

- Good source of fiber: must have between 2.5 to 4.9 grams of fiber per serving

- More or Added Fiber: must have at least 2.5 grams of fiber per serving

(Source: The FDA)

The reason that reading labels can be so important is simple: The food makers are not always as honest and open as they should be. Women's Health magazine author Karen Ansel, a registered dietician, looked at several foods that were labeled as healthy and then looked at their reality. The findings:

A certain green tea with ginseng and honey is sold in a can which according to researchers leads most people to assume it is a single serving item. This particular tea actually contains nearly 3 full servings with 70 calories per serving. While it does have the antioxidant EGCG, this tea also had 12 teaspoons of sugar per 3-serving can.

Crispy apple chips were deceptive for a number of reasons. First, since they are made of dried apples, most people would assume they are diet healthy food, but that is not quite true. The bag itself has more than two servings or the equivalent of 12 of these chips. Each serving has 150 calories, so if you eat the whole bag, you are eating more than 300 calories for a snack. That is just as many calories as a bag of potato chips. And with the chips, you are not getting the sugar that is added. You are also not getting the fiber you would have gotten from eating the apple in the first place.

A packaged container of Mandarin oranges had two servings per small plastic container for 70 calories each. However, the problem is not with the oranges but with what they are soaking in. Most are packaged in pear juice, which is high in sugar.

An ice cream brand labels one of their options as a "personal" container but it is not a single serving container. According to the label, it is actually two servings with 170 calories per serving. Not only does the calorie count get you but the 16 grams of fat from those two servings are killer, too.

The list goes on and on but the point is clear: Make sure that you are reading the labels not only on the front but on the back as well. If something is small, don't assume it is a single serving food. And don't blindly pour food into a bowl or onto a plate. Measure it, weigh it, or learn to portion it out by eyeballing so that you don't consume way more than you need to.

Protica, a liquid protein supplement shot, is already portioned out into small, single serving shots that are consumed in seconds and can keep you energized and your metabolism boosted all day. It is high in protein which is proven to help keep you from feeling hungry and is necessary to keep your lean muscles building and strong.

Why Healthy Food is Important

Why Healthy Food is Important

Your body uses good healthy food to create the energy needed for you to move around, work and enjoy life. The fruits, vegetables, meats and fish that you eat on a regular basis all provide your body with what it needs through the nutrients they contain. Energy by definition is the ability to do work. Your body takes the foods you eat and breaks them down so that their stored energy can be used on a daily basis. The amount of energy that a food provides is measured in the number of calories that it contains. The more calories means the more energy available.

In addition to a certain amount of calories each day your body also requires a balanced variety of six different kinds of nutrients in order to function well. These provide the necessary energy and materials to help repair your body after an exercise session. You may have heard the term essential nutrients, but what are they? Basically these are the nutrients that your body cannot make for itself and need to come from eating good healthy food.

Water

We are made up of about 80% water. You can live a few days without eating, but you need water on a daily basis. Did you know that you continually lose water from your body when you breathe and sweat? Many people don't realize that they lose water when they are sleeping at night. Here is a good health tip, drink one to two 8oz. glasses of water as soon as you wake up. You will start hydrating your body and give what it continually needs, water. Then spread out another six to eight glasses throughout the day to maintain a good water balance in your body.

Carbohydrates

Carbs as they are commonly called, along with fats are needed by your body to produce energy. One (1) gram of carbohydrates contain about four (4) calories. So if you are feeling tired, listless or irritable, it may be because you aren't getting enough good healthy energy producing carbohydrates. Add some good vegetables and fruits to your daily diet plan and avoid the sugary drinks and candies. Yes they have carbohydrates in them, but in the form of sugars and they are not as good for your body as the fruits and vegetables are.

Fats

Fats are shunned by many people especially when they start dieting and are trying to lose weight. However, your body needs a certain amount of fats to function properly and maintain healthy skin, nails and hair. Also, one (1) gram of fat contains a whopping nine (9) calories. So don't cut out all the fat in your diet, instead, switch from eating bad fat sources to good fat sources.

Proteins

Protein is a very important nutrient that many people do not get enough of. Protein can be used by the body as energy, one (1) gram of protein has four (4) calories. However, it serves a much more needed function by providing the necessary materials that your body needs to repair and heal itself, especially after a grueling workout. It is well known that if you are exercising regularly you need to take in good quality sources of protein to help recover from your workouts.

Here is something that most people don't realize:

Your body uses fats to help properly breakdown proteins so they can be absorbed better. That is one of the reasons that low carb, high fat and protein diets are used by people trying to reduce their body fat. These type of diets work in the short term, but after a while those people become irritable and cranky because they cut out all carbohydrates. I know when I cut my carbs when I prepared for a bodybuilding contest, I would be moody and grumpy, but then on my cheat day my attitude improved.

Vitamins & Minerals

Your body needs an adequate amount of vitamins and minerals on a daily basis. These two nutrients work in your body to help in all its functions. Everyday functions such as moving around, thinking, healing sore muscles and injuries as well as helping to break down the carbs, fats and proteins you eat for energy all require vitamins and minerals. One of the best ways to make sure you get enough is to take a good multivitamin everyday.

So, in order to build and maintain a strong healthy energetic body, you need to eat good healthy food and drink water. Avoiding any one form of nutrients will through your body out of balance as well as affect your energy levels. Make sure you add enough water to your diet and balance out the amount of fats, carbohydrates and proteins so you can live healthy, well and enjoy life.

Good Diet Food - A Healthy Approach

Good Diet Food - A Healthy Approach

Good diet food is the same victuals you would consume to maintain your health. Therefore, achieving weight loss is on a parallel path with supplying the vitamins and minerals your body needs to stay healthy.

Healthy diet foods will accomplish both goals.

A good healthy diet that maintains your health will also keep your fat reserves low. In other words, a healthy body is a slim body.

Yes, you can slim your waistline by eating the right foods and avoiding the bad.

Diet Choices For Improved Health

Eating healthy foods can answer the question of how to raise your metabolism.

Raising your metabolism by consuming healthy foods is one of the best weight loss programs to adopt. When combined with moderate exercise you will begin to lose weight naturally.

Good diet foods are almost always part of a heart smart diet. The mixture of eating healthy foods, exercise, and you beginning to lose weight will benefit your heart, other internal organs, and various bodily systems tremendously.

That is much more important than dieting to achieve slim thighs.

However, all too many folks are more interested in how to lose weight fast or how to exercise to lose belly fat than they are in strengthening their heart or otherwise improving their health.

Good Diet Foods

Good diet foods involve nothing more than going natural.

This includes raw food diets that are low in saturated fats, salt, and sugar. In other words, the more natural the foods the better off you are.

The best foods to eat to lose weight naturally are fresh fruits and raw vegetables. Raw vegetables are more conducive to losing weight than are fruits. This is due to the lower sugar content of vegetables.

However, the role raw food enzymes play in aiding weight loss cannot, and should not, be ignored.

Preparing raw vegetable recipes does not mean you have to eat a totally raw vegetable diet. The delicious dishes made from raw vegetables can complement any good meat based entrée you prepare and serve.

Adopting A Healthy Diet Plan

A smart idea when adopting a healthy diet plan to lose weight or improve your overall health is to slowly add raw health foods to what you are familiar eating. Any raw vegetable recipe of your choosing is an excellent accompaniment to a well-prepared entrée.

Adding healthy raw vegetable recipes to boneless skinless chicken breast dishes or baked chicken drumsticks is easy to do and will help you get onto a healthy diet plan without making you feel as though you are being deprived of your favorite foods.

An oven baked whole chicken with appropriate raw vegetable accouterments will satisfy the pickiest eaters you have sitting at your table.

Beef dishes such as ground beef casserole recipes or ground beef goulash, which have been made healthier by applying the tenets of the Mediterranean diet, goes well with many raw vegetable recipes.

Even if a given recipe contains cooked vegetables it is a good idea to serve a raw vegetable dish with it. Unfortunately, cooking destroys the raw food enzymes and many vitamins the vegetables had before they were heated. A raw vegetable recipe adds those vital nutrients back into your meal.

A salad or raw vegetable platter served as an appetizer will supply the vital raw food enzymes your body needs. These enzymes are very delicate and disappear rapidly when subjected to heat. Therefore, it is important you supply these nutrients by offering raw vegetables at every meal.

Good health foods such as these, when served with your traditional recipes, will give you a smooth start to adopting a healthy diet plan.

Learning how to eat healthy is not difficult if you have good diet food and a proven plan. Such a combination of foods is easy to prepare and can be made into succulent dishes you will be proud to serve guests.

Healthy diet foods will accomplish both goals.

Why Is Olive Oil A Healthy Food?

Why Is Olive Oil A Healthy Food?

Olive oil is one of the world's healthiest foods. If you are starting a new healthy eating program you want to make sure that this oil is included. It is the foundation of the Mediterranean diet, who have the world's longest-living cultures. Many of the health-promoting effects of the Mediterranean diet have been credited to olive oil consumption.

What Are The Health Benefits?

The reason that olive oil should be on your healthy foods list is down to a combination of two key health boosting nutrients. These two nutrients are monounsaturated fats and tyrosol esters.

Firstly, monounsaturated fats help to strengthen blood cholesterol levels, which reduce your risk of heart disease and improve blood glucose levels which helps in the treatment of diabetes. The other nutrient, tyrosol esters, help to safeguard against a number of health conditions and infections and also alleviate pain, support your vital organs and fortify your immune system.

Why You Should Control How Much You Consume?

Despite the fact that olive oil is one of the healthiest foods around, it is pure fat so you need to be careful how much you consume at any one time. One tablespoon contains approximately 120 calories so adding just a few tablespoons to your meals can really raise the amount of calories in your food and meals.

How Can You Eat The Right Amount Of Olive Oil?

To add the health benefits of olive oil to your eating plan without going over the top, simple drizzle a tablespoon amount over a salad. Or you can sprinkle meat prior to cooking to add flavour and moisture. Adding a tablespoon to a curry, casserole or any other hot dish will give you the health boosting nutrients contained within the oil without altering the taste or texture of your dish too much.

You only have to look at the statistics behind the Mediterranean diet to see the olive oil health benefits. If you want to eat healthy foods as part of your new eating plan make sure this oil is one of the foods in your new, improved diet. Do bear in mind that you cannot make unhealthy foods healthier simply by adding olive oil to them, so you still need to eat a balanced diet. That means eating the right amount of foods from the main food groups which are considered to be whole grains, fruit and vegetables, protein, diary, fats and sugar.

Diabetic Diet Food - Healthy Food Handling Tips

Diabetic Diet Food - Healthy Food Handling Tips

Did you know that making a few changes with the way you choose and prepare your food could contribute to the health of people with diabetes and the rest of the family?

Eating healthy is essential for diabetics to help them control their blood sugar level, maintain their weight, and prevent them from suffering heart disease and other complications. Though termed as diabetic diet food, the meals prepared for people with diabetes are good for the whole family too.

Here are some healthy cooking and food handling tips for diabetics and the rest of your family:

• Trim the fat. When purchasing meat, choose lean cuts of pork, beef, lamb, and veal. Before cooking, remove all visible fat from the meat.

• Make soups one day ahead and store them in the fridge. This will allow you to remove the fat that has formed on the top of the soup once it is chilled.

• Instead of frying, try other ways of cooking meat products like grilling. Rub dry herbs and spices over the meat before grilling them. It gives the meat great flavor, plus there is no oil or fat involved in your cooking.

• If you really want to eat fried foods, use olive oil in food preparation instead of butter, margarine, or other types of oil. Avoid saturated and trans fat as much as possible. Use non-stick pans and cooking spray too.

• Cut down on sodium. Too much salt in your diet can increase your risk of high blood pressure. Limit salt use by training your taste buds to appreciate herbs and spices. Good salt replacement herbs include basil, bay, dill, rosemary, thyme, dill, and mint.

• When handling vegetables, be sure not to overcook them if ever they require cooking. Veggies tend to lose their nutrients when overcooked. When selecting vegetables, pick those that are in season. Wash them using tap water. Peel them thinly since most of the nutrients of vegetables are mainly found just below their skin. Take care to cook the veggies over low fire. This helps preserve the natural flavors of the veggies and makes them easier to digest.

Eating foods that are good for you requires healthy preparation. Try these healthy food handling tips mentioned above and you are on your way to managing your diabetes.

You may also find interesting that soft drink consumption has doubled, as most 8 year olds consume soft drinks every single day with the phosphorous in these beverages leaching calcium out of bones, and hot dogs, cookies, and sweetened beverages are among the top ten foods consumed by infants and toddlers ages four through twenty-four months. • From birth through age 3, children will develop 75% of their brain during this very crucial time and it depends heavily on the baby's nutritional intake.

  • By age 5, kids will have completed 90% of their brain development
  • Between the ages of 11 and 16, a major growth spurt occurs with significant weight gain and muscle growth.
